The Jamestown Blue Jays fifth-grade traveling girls basketball team placed second at the Jamestown Spring Shoot-out on March 23. The Blue Jays defeated the Mandan Hoop Starz and the New Rockford Rockets before losing to the Fargo Thunder in the championship game. The Blue Jays finished the season with a record of 19-12. The Jamestown Blue Jays sixth-grade boys basketball team won the Jamestown Basketball Booster Club Spring Shoot-Out on Saturday. They beat the Fargo Davies Shooters 42-20, the Carrington Crush 40-30, and the Grand Forks Thunder 54-45 in the championship game. Kade Schumacher (left) and Jaxton Wiest (middle) of Jamestown each placed first at the Region 2 Hoop Shoot Contest in Rapid City, S.D., on March 2. Trey Wiest (right) placed second. Schumacher made 23 of 25 free throws to win the 8-9-year old division. Trey Wiest made 22 of 25 to win the 12-13 division. Jaxton Wiest made 21 of 25 to place second in the 10-11 division. Schumacher and Trey Wiest advance to the National Elks Hoop Shoot Contest in Springfield, Mass., April 18-21. Region 2 consists of North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. The national shoot features 72 other participants from 11 regions. The winners will get their names on a plaque in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Jamestown-Valley City Prowl Bantam Choice won the state tournament last weekend in Hazen. The Prowl defeated the Dickinson Outlaws 7-2 on Friday before taking down West Fargo 6-2 in the semifinals on Saturday. In Sunday’s championship the Prowl skated past the Grand Forks Riverkings 5-2. Alex Gums and Seth Lind each received awards for recording hat tricks in the tournament.
