Governments weigh deicing methods
Humans have armed themselves in the battle against Mother Nature’s icy storms. Some use shovels. Some use snow blowers. But nothing seems more powerful than salt. A snowstorm dropped record amounts of snow on the mid-Atlantic recently, closing shops and inhibiting travel. Other regions of the country, including the Northwest and the Midwest, have been pummeled by snow and ice this winter.By By Ilana E. Strauss, Scripps Howard Foundation Wire , February 17, 2010

Make some time to go out and fish
I woke up this morning to yet another snowstorm. Schools are canceled as is my ice fishing trip. Most anglers look forward to every open water fishing season with lots of excitement and anticipation, but it seems the open water fishing season of 2010 has even more excitement associated with it. That’s great: We should be excited about the opportunity to go fishing. Fishing is a wonderful thing to experience by yourself or with someone. With the way things have been the past couple of years, all of us need something to look forward to.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , February 12, 2010
Sometimes just the basics work best on the ice
The “Dog Days” of winter for some begin in December and aren’t officially over until the last drift of snow disappears from the shelterbelt. I know, Dog Days is generally a summer term referring to a lingering hot and humid period in August, but it also seems appropriate for a long stretch of midwinter weather that just doesn’t want to break for the positive.By By Doug Leier, North Dakota Outdoors , February 12, 2010

Still time for good ice action
In most parts of the Midwest, we’re still kind of in the middle of the ice fishing season: Maybe it would be best described as “late-middle of the season.” The end of the ice fishing season can provide some outstanding action. In fact, many anglers greatly anticipate the last few weeks of ice fishing. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and the fish are willing to bite. Now is when you should be planning an end of the year ice-fishing trip.By By Bob Jensen, Fishing the Midwest , February 05, 2010
Water, power outages remain on reservation

Letter to the editor: Count your blessings during this harsh N.D. winter
After this past week of freezing fog, ice, snow, winds and now colder, we have a lot to be thankful for. In our area we had poles intact, but torn wires, so a few of us were out of power for about three days. But with the help of generators, etc., friends and neighbors and especially Northern Plains Electric and any others out there working, we got through and power has been restored.By Kathy Hieb , February 01, 2010
