Identify disease early to save evergreens
One of the most common diseases of ornamental spruce in North Dakota is needle cast, caused by a fungus. Colorado Blue Spruce is highly susceptible and can sustain severe damage while Black Hills spruce are intermediate in resistance. Home-owners are noticing long black growths in their trees. This growth is a swelling of the branch due to a fungal infection by an or-ganism called Apiosporina morbosa or black knot. This fungus infects open wounds or injuries under the bark of chokecherry, plum, Mayday trees, Canada red cherries but can infect any related Prunus species.May 30, 2009

Experts are finding more evidence of emerald ash borers in the Twin Cities. State tree and insect experts began fanning out along the Minneapolis and St. Paul border Tuesday.
