Hating on Iowa
While I've never lived in Iowa, and though my home in southwest Minnesota has a healthy rivalry with its southern neighbor, I have to admit I like the state. People there are friendly and helpful, an...

There’s no one to blame but yourself for missing class

Why we’re teaming up against this measure
Because proponents of the property tax repeal have taken comments by former Gov. Ed Schafer and me out of context, we have issued a joint statement making it clear that we are opposed to Measure 2.By Lloyd Omdahl, Columnist , May 21, 2012
Poll reveals something about Measure 2
Well, it could be the anti-Measure 2 side’s funding: “We knew going into this that we were going up against big money and powerful people and knew this would be challenging to push,” said Charlene Nelson, chairwoman of Empower the Taxpayer, to Forum Communications.By Grand Forks Herald , May 21, 2012
Letter to the editor: Religious leaders do not need Measure 3’s privileges
In a few days I will be 84 years old. I am a lifelong Catholic and I recently realized that no public issue has ever been so troublesome to me as is Measure 3 on the June 12 ballot in North Dakota. It has been introduced by a group that is led by the two North Dakota Catholic bishops.By George A. Sinner , May 19, 2012
Letter to the editor: Downstream residents must be wary of open ditches
Both the West End and East End outlets from Devils Lake will soon be operating, the North Dakota State Water Commission recently announced. That could mean increased flows in the Sheyenne River, as the two outlets will add a total of 600 cubic feet per second to what is already in the river. By late summer that will mean more than 10 times as much water as normal in the river.By Richard Betting , May 19, 2012

Letter to the editor: Measure 3 guarantees religious freedoms for all
Sometimes, ignorance drives fear. Sometimes, fear drives ignorance. North Dakota’s proposed Measure 3 seems to have generated some of both.By Vince Ulstad , May 18, 2012
N.D. should jealously guard water
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has decided not to push the issue of charging North Dakota users for water from the Missouri River, at least until it has a national policy.By The Bismarck Tribune , May 18, 2012
Letter to the editor: Cramer has the wrong stance on illegal immigration
Congressional candidate Kevin Cramer, who is is trying for the fourth time to warm that seat, tipped his hand recently when asked a challenging question facing our country. His answer was to give up and forget about obeying the law, if it is easy.By Phyllis Hankey Schindele , May 17, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 3 is a great way to unleash endless litigation
Measure 3 amends our North Dakota Constitution to provide that if anyone in North Dakota takes an action based on a “sincerely held religious belief,” our state (for example, state’s attorney, for criminal actions, or labor commissioner, for employment discrimination) would have to prove that our state could prevent that action only if there is a “compelling governmental interest.”By Cheryl Bergian , May 17, 2012
Poll results show that Measure 2 won’t fly
A Forum Communications poll confirms that a majority of North Dakotans are not buying into the phony promises of Measure 2, the proposed property tax repeal. If there is a surprise in the survey conducted by Essman/Research of Des Moines, Iowa, it is that the majority who intend to vote “no” on No. 2 is upward of 70 percent of those polled May 3-8.By The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead , May 17, 2012
Letter to the editor: Ending property taxes will take senior programs’ funds
AARP North Dakota is among a large group of associations, businesses and individuals opposing Measure 2 on the June primary election ballot. AARP joined the Keep It Local North Dakota coalition opposing this constitutional measure because passage of this flawed proposal has the potential to impact numerous services provided by local units of government. Those include emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance.By Janis Cheney , May 16, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 2 will benefit North Dakotans the most
Opponents of Measure 2 seem to be fixated on fact that nonresident property owners would not be paying property taxes. Sixteen percent of total property taxes are paid by nonresident property owners (71 percent of nonresident property is commercial property; 23 percent agricultural and 6 percent residential). While 16 percent of all property is nonresident owned, 84 percent is owned by North Dakota residents.By Robert L. Hale , May 16, 2012
Ease rules on man camps
“Yes, the man camps cause problems, just substantially less problems than any other way to handle it.” That quote from a comment on a Dickinson (N.D.) Press story sums the situation up.By Grand Forks Herald , May 16, 2012
N.D. must vote smart in a month
Less than a month from today, North Dakotans will go to the polls in municipal, primary and statewide elections. The June 12 ballot will be packed not only with candidates for school boards, city commissions and park boards but also with state ballot measures and, in Fargo, an infrastructure sales tax extension.By The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead , May 15, 2012
Letter to the editor: Kalk is the right person to send to Washington
I first met Brian Kalk when he was running for public service commissioner. I liked him instantly and was impressed with his qualifications and the easy and sincere way he related to people of all ages. My respect and admiration for him have increased over the years as he has served our state with common-sense solutions and diligent hard work The people of North Dakota are so fortunate to have somebody like Kalk to send to the House of Representatives in Washington.By Charlane Bertsch , May 15, 2012
