Teach money management early
Money is a subject that almost all people are going to have to learn about at some point in their lives. Some have very good money management skills from the start, while others have to learn the hard way. Because money is something that people need to get by, it is important to start teaching the basic concepts of money management and personal finance to our youth — before they will need to use those skills.By Christina Rittenbach , June 16, 2010
Flood-damaged homes sold at Fargo auction
Tim Thein drove nearly 200 miles to save thousands of dollars and dozens of trees. The Clara City, Minn., resident landed his dream home Thursday in an auction of houses and other buildings that were bought out because of flooding issues. He paid $23,500 for the six-bedroom, 4½-bath brick home that was sold to the government for nearly $380,000. The homes will be either moved or scavenged for parts.May 28, 2010

Trust teenagers to make the right decisions
The teenage years are times when adolescents want to explore their freedom, stretch the limits and see how independent they can be. For parents, this can be a very difficult time. It can be hard to trust your children to do the right thing and make the right choices, and letting teenagers have more independence can be challenging, stressful and worrisome. One important way to reduce stress and give your teenager an appropriate amount of independence to learn responsibility is to have open and active communication with your teens.By Christina Rittenbach , May 19, 2010
Figure finances for moving home
Today, many adult children are returning home to live with their parents. Often this move is because the adult child is experiencing financial problems as the result of being unemployed, in the process of divorce or simply because of the inability to earn enough to make ends meet.By Eunice Sahr , May 12, 2010
Healthy grass can sprout weed-free lawns
To keep a healthy lawn, give it some fertilizer. There are several excellent commercial fertilizers out there. You do not need much. It is good to apply the fertilizer on the holiday schedule. In other words, apply the fertilizer around Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Before the snow starts to fly in October, put on a slow-release fertilizer so your lawn will take off in the early spring (when we have enough heat units).By Lance Brower, NDSU Extension Service , April 28, 2010
Time for spring cleaning
Once or twice a year, house cleaning chores include washing walls, woodwork, outside windows and screens, blankets, spreads, curtains and cleaning out closets and cabinets. Arrange your spring cleaning housework around your peak energy cycle. Some people are at their best early in the morning. Other people peak in the afternoon. Alternate the “high energy” jobs with “low energy” jobs. Be careful not to lose time by working so hard one day that you have no energy left for the next day.By Eunice Sahr, NDSU Extension Service , April 20, 2010

Grow herbs at home or in garden
Add a touch of spring to your home all year long. Consider growing some herbs in your home, a container or garden outside. Growing herbs can be a fun project for kids and may encourage them to try some different foods, too. Soon you’ll be adding extra flavor to your recipes without extra calories or sodium. Compared with the cost of fresh herbs available in some grocery stores, you will have a ready supply at a fraction of the cost. Which herbs should I choose?By Luella Morehouse, NDSU Extension Service , April 07, 2010

GF home sales hold steady
Steady, steady, steady. That’s how John Colter, director of the Grand Forks Board of Realtors, described the local housing market, even during the booms and collapses in other parts of the U.S. “We’ve been consistent,” Colter said. “Back in the mid-2000s, when the East Coast and West Coast were going crazy, our sales rates just rose at a nice steady pace. Even during the gloom and doom of the housing crisis, our market has always been good.”By By James R. Johnson , Forum Communications Co. , April 06, 2010

Effective co-parenting benefits children
When a married couple goes through the divorce process, many emotions may be running rampant between the two partners. Anger, frustration, sadness, guilt and irritation can be clouding the vision and controlling the mind of individuals in the middle of a divorce. While these are all very normal feelings during such a difficult transition, those who have children involved need to be especially careful about how, where and when their strong emotions take over.By Christine Rittenbach, NDSU Extension Service , March 24, 2010
