Since joining the Western Collegiate Hockey Association 17 years ago, Alaska Anchorage has never finished in the top half of the standings.
The Seawolves have occupied the basement six times and have finished next-to-last five times.
But despite a roster of 19 underclassmen, three juniors and five seniors, Anchorage is hitting the stretch run with a legitimate shot at getting home ice for the WCHA playoffs — a chase that the Seawolves haven’t experienced in nine years.

Chris VandeVelde scored three goals and Jake Marto had a goal and two assists as North Dakota beat Alaska-Anchorage 6-2 Saturday to keep a share of the lead in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Alaska-Anchorage held off a late surge by North Dakota for a wild 3-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association victory Friday.
The Seawolves led 3-0 late, threatening to post their first shutout of UND in the two teams’ 55th meeting. But Ryan Duncan scored on the power play with 2:04 left to prevent that milestone.
