Minnesota State University Moorhead’s role in fighting the 2009 flood has put the campus security director in the national spotlight. Michael Parks, who served as the university’s incident commander during last spring’s flood, was named campus security director of the year by Campus Safety magazine.

Minnesota State University-Moorhead (Minn.) will host a preview day Friday in the Comstock Memorial Union. Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day. Check in begins one half hour prior. Interested students can tour campus, talk to students, faculty and campus representatives, learn about academic majors and student services and have refreshments in the student union.

MSUM lacks athletic funds

While Minnesota State Moorhead has slightly increased scholarships in its most visible sports over the last seven years, the athletic department is still not keeping pace with the rest of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Last year, the Dragons had the least athletically related student aid in the conference with $553,178, according to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Web site.

MSUM announces fall semester dean’s list

The following area students have been named to the Minnesota State University Moorhead dean’s list in recognition of academic achievement fall semester 2009. Students must maintain a 3.25 or higher grade point average and carry 12 graded credits to qualify for the honor.

Grant aims at preparation

Three area universities are part of a $40 million effort to prepare more effective teachers. North Dakota State University in Fargo, Minnesota State University Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn., and Valley City (N.D.) State University are among 14 campuses to receive funding through a Bush Foundation grant. The goal is to produce at least 25,000 new and effective teachers over the next decade to replace teachers who are expected to leave or retire in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
