Class A boys extend streak

An early spur in offense by Class A was enough to extinguish thoughts of another close game with their Class B counterparts. Jamestown College recruit Jake Bauer of Dickinson posted 15 points in the first half, hitting three three-pointers to help Class A to a 74-63 victory over Class B in the Lions All-star basketball series on Wednesday at the Fargo Civic Center.

Marquee starters were long gone. So were nearly all the other pitchers. His bullpen empty, National League manager Clint Hurdle approached David Wright and asked whether he had the right stuff to take the mound and close out the All-Star game. Did the New York Mets third baseman think chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon or general manager Omar Minaya would mind?

Fit to be tied?

Center fielder Nate McLouth threw out a runner at the plate in the bottom of the 11th inning, and Aaron Cook wriggled out of three jams to keep the All-Star game tied at 3 after 12 innings Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Class A all-stars sweep

Michael Ulmer helped give Class A a sweep on the opening night of the Lions All-Star basketball series on Tuesday night in Bismarck. Moments after Mr. Basketball winner Austin Dufault gave Class A the lead on a clutch three-pointer, the Bismarck High graduate answered with a clutch shot of his own to give Class A a 68-67 victory at the Bismarck Civic Center.

Longoria, Hart get final two All-Star spots

Evan Longoria had big plans for next week’s All-Star break — a trip to Las Vegas with some friends. Tampa Bay’s rookie third baseman ended up with an even better trip to New York for the last All-Star game at Yankee Stadium.

Brent Krause has been chosen as an all-star for the second consecutive season. The former Jamestown College standout was named as an outfield starter for the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball’s All-Star Game on July 22 at Midway Stadium in St. Paul.

JC’s Price 4-for-4 for Team USA in opener

Kayla Price of Jamestown College is competing on an all-star softball team in Barcelona, Spain. Price is one of four Dakota Athletic Conference players on Team USA at the Spanish Softball Series. Valley City State coach Chad Slyter is the head coach and Vikings players Amanda Carter, Kaleigh Will and Krystal Hathaway are also on the team. Team USA consists of players from North Dakota, Nebraska, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey and Pennsylvania through USA Athletes International.

Cubs, Red Sox land seven

Maybe Manny Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and the rest of the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs should just play their own All-Star game. A charmed season for the Cubs got even better Sunday when they put a team-record seven players on the NL roster. The World Series champion Red Sox also will send seven to Yankee Stadium on July 15.

Voting oddities

It’s not along the lines of the infamous hanging chads, but sports certainly have their own version of voting irregularities. I was at the Twins/Diamondbacks game last Friday night and around the third inning or so out came the annoying All-Star ballots. With the Twins in their militant push for Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau to earn a free trip to Yankee Stadium, I succumbed and did my part.

Allen, James lift East

In a proud city still restoring its unique beauty, the Eastern Conference repaired its own image. Ray Allen scored 28 points, making three straight 3-pointers in the final 3:15, and LeBron James added 27 as the East, widely considered the NBA’s weaker half, beat the Western Conference 134-128 in Sunday night’s All-Star Game.

West tops East

Kevin Robinson lived up to his reputation as a player who can do it all, catching a touchdown pass and returning a punt for a score in the West’s 31-13 victory over the East on Saturday night in the 83rd East-West Shrine Game. The former Utah State star gave the West a 7-3 lead when he returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter. He quickly dashed past the first wave of defenders and then outran a couple more before juking the punter on his way into the end zone, which he flipped into.
