North Dakota State’s Whitney Carlson has been named the Summit League Women’s Athlete of the month after setting two records in April.
Carlson, a junior from Buchanan, broke the school record in the heptathlon (5,343) at the Mt. SAC/Cal Invitational Combined Events in April 15.
Playing her best at the most important events, Serena Williams re-established herself as the top player in women’s tennis in 2009 and was a landslide choice as Female Athlete of the Year by members of The Associated Press.
Jamestown College junior John Peabody was named to the NAIA Division II men’s basketball Scholar Athlete list.
Peabody was also a second-team all-DAC selection this season. The 6-foot-8 center led the Jimmies in scoring (12.35 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg) despite missing several games with mono.
Bismarck High School’s Jason Duchscherer has been named the 2007-08 Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
Duchscherer, the third Demon to win the award, placed first in the 400 and second in the 100 and 200 at the state Class A track and field meet last month. He also ran a leg in the Demons’ winning 800 meter relay team as Bismarck captured the state team title as well.
Kaitlin Walsh and Nate Bivens from Jamestown High School and Cassie Dellwo and Danny White from Jamestown College have been named Athletes of the Week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.
