The auditor for New Town has been charged in the disappearance of more than $50,000 in city funds.
Mountrail County Sheriff Ken Halvorson said Tanya Salter is suspected of misapplication of entrusted funds.
The auditor position in Morton County will remain an elected office.
The county commission voted 5-0 against making it an appointed office after hearing Monday from many residents opposed to that idea.
Discussion about making it an appointed office began earlier this year when Paul Trauger announced plans to retire as auditor when his term expires in 2011.
Most North Dakotans don’t know what the state auditor does. Most of the time, that’s a good thing. It suggests the auditor’s office is going about its business professionally and efficiently. Under Auditor Bob Peterson, that’s been the rule. Without fanfare or news releases, Peterson and his staff of professional auditors have done an excellent job of examining, analyzing and making recommendations regarding the financial operation and condition of state agencies. Peterson has earned a fourth term because he and his agency do a good job for the people of North Dakota.
The Forum editorial board says my opponent’s low-key management style is effective and appropriate. I strongly disagree. The state auditor, as an elected official, should be able to speak up, help resolve audit issues and defend his staff without being called a “partisan showboat.”
I have the audit leadership skills to make a significant difference in the support and management of the office. I am an independent, certified auditor with 23 years of audit experience at MDU Resources. I have the expertise to do the proper risk analysis and work with the Legislature to ensure the right audits are conducted. My leadership in the energy industry and audit profession will be beneficial as North Dakota addresses increasing energy revenues and the state surplus.
