Senate kills bill specifying how far vehicles need to be from bicycles

BISMARCK — The North Dakota Senate killed a bill on Monday that would have required at least 3 feet between vehicles and bicycles on the road. Sen. Gary Lee, R-Casselton, said the bill was brought forward on behalf of bicycle enthusiasts with the intent to create a safer shared roadway and to better define the relationship between cars and bikes. Doubt about whether there would be “consistent, meaningful” enforcement was an issue for the Transportation Committee, Lee said.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — A Minnesota woman has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in a 2008 crash in Richland County that killed a man. Prosecutor Ron McBeth told the Fargo Forum that the deal 39-year-old Melanie Flegel, of Dilworth, Minn., agreed to calls for a one-year sentence, although the judge could overrule that and give her up to five years.

Fatal car crashes with teen drivers drop

ATLANTA — Fatal car crashes involving teen drivers fell by about a third over five years, according to a new federal report that partly credits the drop to tougher state limits on younger drivers. The number of deaths tied to these accidents fell dramatically from about 2,200 in 2004 to 1,400 in 2008, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.
