The kind of avalanche that killed four snowboarders and a skier in Colorado over the weekend is among the most difficult to predict and trigger, but it's dangerous because of the amount of snow normally involved.
CHAMONIX, France (AP) — A climber trying to scale Mont Blanc may accidentally have caused a slab of ice to snap off Thursday high in the French Alps, sparking an avalanche that swept nine European climbers to their deaths, authorities said. A dozen climbers were injured and two were still missing by nightfall.
With winter in full force many North Dakota snowmobilers are planning trips in search of deep powder and steep slopes. But it’s not only snowmobile season, it is also avalanche season. When snowmobiling in mountainous terrain, riders need to be prepared, remembering to bring avalanche gear, according to the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department.
Search teams recovered the bodies of seven snowmobilers Monday, a day after they were swept away by avalanches in western Canada’s backcountry, police said. An eighth man was missing and believed dead.
