VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Members of the North Dakota Department of Transportation and law enforcement officials from Ashley to Wahpeton met here Thursday to announce to the launch of a new program to combat intoxicated driving.
The Regional Driving Under the Influence Task Force Program will start Oct. 1 with required quarterly saturation checkpoints in the southeast Jamestown region, which encompasses Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Stutsman, Barnes, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh and Dickey counties.
Voters at Barnes County North will go to the polls Monday to decide if a new centralized school building will be constructed. The $14.5-million project would combine the separate school operations of North Central of Barnes, Wimbledon Courtenay and Spiritwood into one location just west of Leal on Highway 9.
From a soccer mom to a military mom, Loni Barnes of Alexandria shared her perspective at Monday’s Memorial Day service at Kinkead Cemetery.
Her son, Justin Barnes, a 2001 Jefferson High School graduate, is a firefighter/rescue EMT for the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Yuma, Ariz.

The Barnes County Historical Society presents author Terry Shoptaugh who will discuss his recently published book, “They Were Ready: The 164th Infantry in the Pacific Wa,” on how the North Dakota National Guard’s 164th Infantry contributed to the United States’ World War II victory in the Pacific at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in the Barnes County Museum in Valley City.

Crews are reinforcing an emergency spillway at Clausen Springs Dam in Barnes County, N.D., hoping to prevent the kind of severe erosion that forced residents downstream in Kathryn to flee their homes last April.
“We are in the process of armoring the damaged spillway, laying fabric, putting rock riprap and channeling flows should they start discharging over the spillway so that we’re not looking at the same level of erosion as last year,” said Jamie Smith, secretary of the Barnes County Water Resource District, which oversees the dam.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Southeast Region will conduct an alcohol saturation event Friday and Saturday in Barnes County. In conjunction with the alcohol saturation event, a sobriety checkpoint will be conducted at an undisclosed location and time in Barnes County, on Friday.
Barnes County North officials are starting planning for the years beyond 2012, according to Doug Jacobson, superintendent of the school. The school board and administration are looking at three options for the future, including the possibility of combining its facilities into one new building.
