FARGO — When North Dakota State fans left TCF Bank Field in the wake of a 37-24 victory in 2011, the hope for many was to book a return trip to the University of Minnesota as soon as possible. ASAP is quickly turning to no chance at all.

New look to Big Ten this year

The bigger Big Ten is ready to go. After talking about the move for more than a year, the biggest addition — No. 10 Nebraska — will begin its season Saturday and all 12 conference members are in action this week in a league that will have two divisions and a title game for the first time.

End of an era in Big Ten

Indy to host Big Ten title game in 2011

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Big Ten has chosen Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis as the site for the first Big Ten football championship game in 2011. John Dedman, spokesman for the Indiana Sports Corp., said the Big Ten approached Indianapolis to host the event, and there was no formal bidding process.

Huskers’ Osborne to be at Big Ten session

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska isn’t waiting until next year to get involved in the Big Ten. Athletic director Tom Osborne will be at the league’s preseason meetings in Chicago early next month. Associate athletic director Marc Boehm says the former football coach will be able to provide input, but won’t have a vote along with the other athletic directors until July 1, 2011.

Westbrook, Minnesota beat Penn State, Battle

Lawrence Westbrook won a terrific duel with Talor Battle, tying his career high with 29 points to lead Minnesota to a 75-70 victory over Penn State on Tuesday night in a Big Ten opener. Battle had 23 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Nittany Lions (8-5, 0-1) but couldn’t quite match Westbrook shot for shot down the stretch.

Big Ten looking into possible expansion

The Big Ten might be getting bigger. Commissioner Jim Delany said Tuesday the conference is going to explore options over the next 12 to 18 months for expanding the league. The league’s presidents and chancellors decided this month that the timing is right to study adding a 12th school.

Wisconsin pushing Big Ten hockey

UND and Minnesota will pack about 12,000 frenzied fans in Ralph Engelstad Arena this weekend for the longest standing college hockey rivalry in the country. Don’t expect the rivalry to go anywhere, despite the University of Wisconsin’s wishes that the Gophers pull out of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and start up a Big Ten Hockey Conference.
