Crews searched by sea and air and sought the public's help Monday as they ramped up their efforts to find a husband and wife and two young children who sent a series of distress calls to the Coast Guard the day before, saying their sailboat was sinking far off the Central California coast and they were fashioning a raft from a cooler and a life ring.
Children ages 12-15 who want to operate a boat or personal watercraft this summer must take the state’s boating basics course.
State law requires youngsters ages 12-15 to pass the course before they operate a boat or personal watercraft with at least a 10 horsepower motor. In addition, major insurance companies give adult boat owners who pass the course a premium discount on boat insurance.
The Jamestown Fire Department assisted Thursday when two men became stranded on a boat, according to Sheldon Mohr, JFD training officer.
Mohr said the call came in about 3:30 p.m. The men were stranded at a sandbar by Pipestem Dam in Jamestown.
As the Missouri River slowly recedes back to within its banks over the next few weeks, North Dakota Game and Fish Department biologists are anticipating that many boat ramps will require substantial work before they are useable again.
Last month when I motored the old Lund boat into the marina in Saskatchewan, someone shouted from a boat docked near shore: “Hey! I thought you were going to buy a new boat!”
‘Next year!” I called back.
