John Stern has lived in Fargo all his life, buying a dream home on the Red River more than 25 years ago.
The city is offering to pay him for the 1,800-square-foot Frank Lloyd Wright family home if he wants to move off the flood plain. But Stern says he’s not going anywhere.

Cass County doesn’t expect to demolish any buyout homes before the anticipated spring flood. But it also won’t need to protect them, which will make the fight easier, said County Engineer Keith Berndt.
As of last week, the county had closed on 15 buyouts, out of a total of 80 potential buyout properties that are among the most flood-prone in the county.

Tuesday is the deadline for anyone in Jamestown interested in participating in the buyout portion of the Federal Emergency Management Agency mitigation program to make an application. To date, five home owners have shown an interest in participating.
The Jamestown city engineer’s office is currently working on the formal Federal Emergency Management Agency mitigation submittal which is due Nov. 13. This submittal includes the possible “buyout” of properties along the river that are prone to flooding. To date, only four individuals have indicated an interest in pursuing this option.
