Calvin “Kelly” Spravzoff, 78, Jamestown, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, N.D., after a battle with cancer.
Mr. Spravzoff was born April 9, 1931, in Fargo, the son of Steve and Marion (Dulski) Spravzoff. He grew up on a farm in Woodworth, N.D., and attended school in Carrington, N.D. He moved to Jamestown in 1946 and entered the U.S. Air Force in February 1948, serving in Iceland and Alaska. He was discharged in 1952.
John Calvin, the Great Reformer, used dictatorial means in making Geneva a “Protestant Rome,” but he also planted the seeds of modern democracy.
He enforced rigid morality and stressed the importance of helping others, while he also had a share in developing capitalism. He supported the destruction of religious statues and other images, but described the arts as gifts from God.
