MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Frozen cars sputtered, schools canceled classes and cold-weather enthusiasts opted to stay inside Monday as a bitter blast of below-zero temperatures with promises of minus-50 wind chills gripped the Northeast.
Because of weather and ice on the road, the North Dakota Department of Transportation closed Highway 27 from Highway 1 east to Lisbon, N.D.
Also because of weather, The McIntosh County Road Supervisor is asking all motorists driving on the county gravel roads to not exceed 25 mph.
Starbucks Corp. has named all 600 company-owned stores it plans to close in a bid to boost its business and weed out unprofitable locations. Four of the stores are in North Dakota.
Three of the North Dakota stores scheduled to close are in Fargo and one is at Bismarck’s Kirkwood Mall.
General Motors is closing four truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, affecting 10,000 workers, as surging fuel prices hasten a dramatic shift to smaller vehicles.
