Former longtime Bismarck High School football coach Bob Feeney died Monday at his Bismarck home at age 73. Feeney was head coach at Bismarck for 25 seasons and posted a 169-82 record, including state titles in 1984 and 1985.

Opinion corner: Grass not always greener

Calls or emails from coaches this time of year make me a little nervous. Not in a negative way, but if a coach gets a new job and is going to leave, usually it’s sometime in the spring or early summer. If I was an athletic director at a Division II or big-time NAIA college and needed a basketball, baseball, volleyball or any other kind of coach, I’d be sniffing around Jamestown College.

The former Grand Forks Central star, who played seven seasons in the NFL after going 30-12 as Wisconsin’s quarterback from 2000-03 — including a Rose Bowl victory in 2000 — was in Jamestown this week to host the Bollinger QB & Receiver School at Rollie Greeno Field.

Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly posted on his Twitter feed Tuesday that he had not interviewed with Notre Dame. Kelly declined comment to the AP when asked about the Notre Dame coaching vacancy and reports that he could be the next Fighting Irish coach.

University of North Dakota officials say head men’s basketball coach Brian Jones has been given a three-year contract extension. The announcement was made by co-athletic directors Steve Brekke and Betty Ralston.
