BCN bond issue to return: Voters in the school district will again decide whether to build a new school in Leal area

Voters in the Barnes County North Public School District will go to the polls for the second time in seven months to decide a school bond issue. An election has been scheduled for April 19 on a $14.5 million bond issue to build a centralized school. The same issue failed on Sept. 20 when it received just less than 50 percent of the vote. It needed a 60 percent majority to pass.

School plan: Barnes County North considers centralization

Voters at Barnes County North will go to the polls Monday to decide if a new centralized school building will be constructed. The $14.5-million project would combine the separate school operations of North Central of Barnes, Wimbledon Courtenay and Spiritwood into one location just west of Leal on Highway 9.

W-C students get pink pancakes

The elementary students at the Wimbledon-Courtenay site of the Barnes County North School District recently celebrated the 100th day of school in a unique way. The teachers cooked 100 pink pancakes, which they served to the students. The pancakes were colored pink to show support to Wimbledon-Courtenay High School senior Erin Christ, who is battling Hodgkins’ lymphoma and in observance of Coaches against Cancer.

Train derails: Train goes off rails near Courtenay

Twenty-four cars of an estimated 75 to 100 cars of a Canadian Pacific train derailed near here between 9 and 10 a.m. Wednesday. The incident occurred one mile west and one mile north of Courtenay on the Canadian Pacific mainline.

Car totaled by fire after rollover

A car was destroyed in a fire after a rollover crash early Saturday near Spiritwood, N.D., according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol. The patrol said Thomas Palmer, 40, Courtenay, N.D., was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Stutsman County Road 62 about 3.4 miles north of Spiritwood at about 3 a.m. Saturday.
