Bismarck-Mandan has a close relationship with George Armstrong Custer and the U.S. Seventh Cavalry.
It was from here that Custer and his command departed for the Little Big Horn and the terrible battle that left an indelible mark in history. Now, more than 134 years later, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, and the reconstructed Custer House and other buildings from the period, are a part of the tourism draw for the area.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The only U.S. flag not captured or lost during George Armstrong Custer's Last Stand at the Battle of Little Bighorn in southeastern Montana sold at auction Friday for $2.2 million.
A group of people from Idaho, Montana and Wyoming is retracing Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer’s path from Fort Abraham Lincoln in North Dakota to the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Montana.
The Custer Military Trail Historic Archaeological District in Billings and Golden Valley counties has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s list of properties it considers worthy of preservation and recognition.
Internationally noted Custer historian and author Sandy Barnard will lecture and sign copies of his books at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora Saturday and Sunday.
With the approach of the 132nd anniversary of the Battle of Little Big Horn, Barnard will present his talk on “Custer and the Frontier Army —Caught between a Rock and a Hard Place.”
