Many schools in the Dakotas called off classes or started late Monday, state Capitol offices were closed all morning and the North Dakota Legislature canceled its session for the day following a record-breaking snow storm over the weekend.
Farmers and ranchers in the Dakotas and other northern states are making hay in more ways than one. Northern producers enjoying a good hay crop have been selling to their counterparts in southern states hit by drought.
Sunflower crops could set records in the nation’s top two producing states this year, helping to blunt a drop in nationwide production and ensure a healthy supply for processors in the United States and Canada.
The good year for growers in North Dakota and South Dakota in turn might help keep consumer prices down for foods that use sunflower oil although worries remain about the weather-delayed harvest.
