Here's a little secret for all you procrastinators on Tax Day: The Internal Revenue Service doesn't like to talk about it, but as long as you don't owe any additional taxes, there is no penalty for filing a few days late.
The North Dakota Department of Commerce today extended the timeframe for submitting the appliance rebate form and materials from 30 to 90 days in response to delays people are experiencing in securing refrigerators from dealers who are experiencing high demand and short supply for the appliances nationwide.
The deadline to file taxes ended at midnight Thursday, and tax preparers and post offices in the area reported business pretty much as usual.
The Internal Revenue Service had reported earlier this week that as many as one-fourth of taxpayers had yet to file.
With just four days remaining until the filing deadline, incumbents and challengers have filed to put their name on the June primary ballot here.
“The process is moving at us quickly,” said Noel Johnson, chief operating officer and election administrator for Stutsman County. “The deadline for filing is 4 p.m. Friday at the courthouse for county or state offices, at City Hall for city offices or at the school business office for the school board.”
Local officials received a “drop-dead” deadline Tuesday of summer 2010 for picking a permanent flood protection option.
But as the timetable for decision-making undergoes refinement, the most popular option so far – a diversion on the North Dakota side of the Red River – remains too expensive for federal funding.

The deadline has passed for submitting claims in a federal class action lawsuit against the city of Fargo over traffic fines.
Notices were sent to drivers letting them know they were eligible for part of the $1.5 million settlement. Monday was the deadline to submit a claim.
