Officials: Plan will curb DUIs

Officials: Plan will curb DUIs VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Members of the North Dakota Department of Transportation and law enforcement officials from Ashley to Wahpeton met here Thursday to announce to the launch of a new program to combat intoxicated driving. The Regional Driving Under the Influence Task Force Program will start Oct. 1 with required quarterly saturation checkpoints in the southeast Jamestown region, which encompasses Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Stutsman, Barnes, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh and Dickey counties.

Dickey County Relay for Life team leaders will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the ambulance garage in Oakes to continue preparations for the relay to be held June 25 at the Ellendale High School track.

Volunteers continue to help flood victims

Volunteers continue to help flood victims Wayne and Lois Triepke evacuated their home last year after the James River inundated their basement, surrounded their home and created an island of their cattle feedlot. The couple had decided earlier that season to sandbag the exterior of their 120-year old home north of Dickey, N.D., one March morning. By nightfall, the project was done, thanks to family, friends, neighbors and local schoolchildren.

Library board looking for sites for new building

The Jamestown/Stutsman County Joint Library Board started looking at suggested sites for a new facility, capable of housing both libraries, at its meeting Wednesday. The board considered more than 25 potential buildings or sites and eliminated virtually all of them as unsuitable or unavailable. Alfred Dickey Public Library Director Daphne Drewello said she wrote down every site she could remember that had been suggested at any time. The conclusion was that many old and not-so-old buildings in the city would be too difficult and too expensive to renovate into a functional library for the next 100 years.

The 2009 March for Memories is planned for July. Dickey Rural Networks will be sponsoring a 5K walk and 5K run in remembrance of past employees Mark Scallon and Margaret Barton. DRN started the Annual 5K Walk/Run in honor of Scallon, a past general manager at DRN, who died of cancer in February 2005.

The emergency spillway at Lake LaMoure continues to erode, according to Sheri Gartner, LaMoure County emergency manager. Officials in LaMoure and Dickey counties are strongly recommending evacuation of all rural residences downstream as a safety precaution.

Traveling by boat near Dickey Some LaMoure County residents continue a wet battle with Mother Nature following rising waters in the valleys of the James River and the Cottonwood and Bone Hill creeks. Brad Carpenter, a cattle rancher who has lived in Dickey for all 57 years of his life, has never seen water levels in the James River Valley as high as they currently are, even during the flood of 1997, he said. There is no gauge in place in Dickey. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the river at Adrian is more than 36 feet at the gauge.

Xcel announces its first N.D. wind farm

Xcel Energy plans to build its first North Dakota wind farm, company officials said Friday. The 150-megawatt farm will be near Merricourt, N.D., in Dickey and McIntosh counties, and should be ready to generate electricity by late 2011.

Schools discuss special education redesign plan

In the seventh special education redesign draft, officials presented a plan that would leave most services and personnel the same, but would cost Jamestown Public Schools about $80,000 more. Jamestown, as well as Medina, Montpelier and Pingree-Buchanan school districts make up the Buffalo Valley Special Education unit. To cut costs and continue its level of service, BVSEU is considering partnering with the Dickey-LaMoure Special Education Unit, which consists of the Edgeley, Ellendale, Kulm, LaMoure and Litchville-Marion districts.

DRN sponsors March for Memories

The 2008 March for Memories is scheduled July 12. Dickey Rural Networks will be sponsoring a 5K Walk and 5K Run in remembrance of past employees Mark Scallon and Margaret Barton. DRN started the Annual 5K Walk/Run in honor of Scallon, a past general manager at DRN, who lost his battle with cancer in February 2005. Barton, a retired office manager, battled cancer which took her life in February 2006. In honor of these two and others who have battled cancer, all proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
