North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple sent a letter Tuesday to President Barack Obama requesting a federal disaster declaration to help 16 counties and the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation recover from spring flooding.
North Dakota's governor and congressional delegation say the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the city of Minot and Ward County more than $40 million in disaster relief funding.

The new Congress on Friday rushed out $9.7 billion to help pay flood insurance claims to 115,000 people and businesses afflicted by Superstorm Sandy, two days after New Jersey’s governor and other Northeast Republicans upbraided Speaker John Boehner for killing a broader package for state and local governments in the storm’s path.

NEW YORK (AP) — The image of his brother trapped in a car with water rising to his neck, his eyes silently pleading for help, is part of a recurring nightmare that wakes Anthony Gatti up, screaming, at night.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple has declared a statewide rural fire emergency.
Dalrymple issued the executive order on Wednesday. He said weather conditions have created a serious fire threat in much of North Dakota.
In the event of an emergency, 115 Jamestown High School freshmen are now prepared to take response measures after participating in Thursday’s Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) disaster drill exercise.
The exercise marked the culmination of nearly two months of Teen CERT training for these students in conjunction with the health classes offered at JHS.
