Minnesota State University Moorhead is considering starting an NCAA Division I hockey program, but North Dakota State University in neighboring Fargo is not.
Bison athletic director Gene Taylor says NDSU has other priorities at the moment.
The North Dakota men’s basketball team hopes to emulate the North Dakota State squad, which made it to the NCAA tournament in its first season of Division I postseason eligibility.
UND coach Brian Jones said a lot has to happen in the next few years, but a winning record in the Fighting Sioux program’s first Division I season is a good start.
Kierah Kimbrough chose the University of North Dakota over basketball scholarship offers from a number of NCAA Division I schools.
“I wanted to be part of UND’s tradition of competing for national championships and I wanted to stay close to home,” Kimbrough said.
In her senior year, she will remain close to family members who live 90 miles away in Greenbush, Minn. But there will be no playoffs in her final season. As a first-year participant in Division I, UND is not eligible for the postseason.
