The recovery of the bald eagle is one of the most visible conservation recovery success stories for our nation.
While the plight of whooping cranes and California condors is well documented and well known, these birds have struggled to gain ground and are still rooted on the endangered species list.
The bald eagle, on the other hand, has recovered to the point where an observation no longer results in a phone call to Game and Fish to report a sighting.

As part of the James River Valley Library System Board’s efforts to inform the public on the process of building a new library, I wrote about why there was a need to build a new library. Another, more specific question that needs to be answered is “Why was the Essentia site chosen?” To adequately answer, a direct comparison must be made between the Essentia site and the second choice — the Eagles site.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles will make it official next month and place their franchise tag on quarterback Michael Vick.
The move will prevent Vick from leaving Philadelphia this offseason and ensure he’s tied to the Eagles for the 2011 season.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota wildlife officials say the number of bald eagles observed in early January along a stretch of the Missouri River was up significantly from last year and slightly above average.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — The tall rancher with bad ankles and wind-burned cheeks serves a cup of hot tea to the eagle lady.
They might be worlds apart, these two, one a cattleman to the core, the other a petite academic with a doctorate degree in biology.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick is the talk of everything.
Whether it’s Whoopi Goldberg and the women on “The View” or Chris Berman and the former jocks on ESPN, everyone has an opinion about Vick these days. The star quarterback’s remarkable comeback story has captured the world’s attention and transcended sports.
KEMPTON, Pa. (AP) — Bird-watchers at a ridgetop preserve in eastern Pennsylvania counted a record number of migrating bald eagles this fall, another sign of the species’ remarkable comeback following a century of decline.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick shook off all the hard hits, continued to get up off the ground and kept making plays.
Vick threw for 302 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, rallying the Philadelphia Eagles to a 34-24 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday night.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Vick is more likely to begin the game at wide receiver than quarterback this week.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said Kevin Kolb will be the starting quarterback at Jacksonville on Sunday, despite a pair of impressive performances by Vick.
The Eagles Ladies Auxiliary will be serving walking tacos at the Buffalo Mall from 10 a.m. 3:30 p.m. Saturday for Home on the Range and other local charities. The group will be set up by the KMart entrance. Cost is $3 for walking tacos, $2 for hotdogs and $1 for pop or water.
Donovan McNabb is changing uniforms and staying in the NFC East.
The Philadelphia Eagles traded McNabb to the Washington Redskins for a pair of draft picks on Sunday night. The Eagles will receive a second-round pick (37th overall) in this month’s NFL draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year.
Brian Westbrook could break open a game from almost anywhere on the field.
Lined up in the slot, he could run a slant, beat a linebacker and take off with no one able to catch No. 36. His defining moment with the Philadelphia Eagles came on an 84-yard punt return that stunned the New York Giants in 2003.
