Pigs at the trough
Most Americans may not be fluent in the language of economics, but thanks to our Puritan heritage (“waste not, want not”) we understand waste quite well. The annual ritual of rendering unto Caesar on April 15 brings with it the always-useful “Congressional Pig Book.” Compiled by Citizens Against Government Waste, the “Pig Book” lists some of the more outrageous spending indulged in by our “public servants” in pursuit of the only bipartisan activities still practiced in Washington: spending and re-election.By Cal Thomas, Tribune Media Services , April 16, 2010
Restaurants team up with Civic Center to boost tournament hospitality
Class B high school basketball tournaments held at the Civic Center generate more than 16,000 visitors to Jamestown and about $1 million in economic impact, according to Civic Center Manager Pam Fosse. The numbers are conservative and don’t include the teams and their officials. In all, Fosse said, just those six basketball tournaments — boys and girls county, district and regional — can generate close to 20,000 visitors to Jamestown. Those numbers alone make tournaments here a priority, Fosse said. They also mean looking for ways to increase tournament action at the Civic Center.January 29, 2010

What others think" Businesses must reach out to young people
If Bismarck-Mandan wants its next generation ready in numbers to face the challenges of the future, then it does need to reach out to young people. But it needs to do so by offering challenging positions with responsibility and competitive pay. While it helps having recreational and cultural attractions for young people, the real carrots are jobs in their fields that come with competitive pay based on performance.By The Bismarck Tribune , December 08, 2008

Tax rebate checks will be mailed by spring
The checks aren’t in the mail, but they will be soon. President Bush signed legislation Wednesday to rush rebates ranging from $300 to $1,200 to millions of people, the centerpiece of government efforts to brace the wobbly economy. First, though, you must file your 2007 tax return. More than 130 million people are expected to get the rebates, starting around May.By Jeannine Aversa, The Associated Press , February 14, 2008
Better get a job until the rebate comes
Word on the street is that the federal government is going to rush us a big tax rebate so we can spend it quickly to save many bottom lines and, probably, many bottoms. They may have agreed on a bill but the check may not be in the mail very soon. I am so skeptical of bureaucracies that my rebate is in my estate plan.By Lloyd Omdahl , February 11, 2008
