Too few new N.D. state jobs?

North Dakota will add 144 full-time equivalent positions to state government’s workforce in the next few months. The 2013 Legislature approved the job growth. Gov. Jack Dalrymple’s budget proposal had called for more state employees in specific classifications to deal with rapidly rising demand for state services.

List alone won’t be enough

If the North Dakota Industrial Commission is serious, more of the state’s “culturally important” places might be off limits to oil, gas and other potentially damaging development. Greg Danz, proprietor of Zandbroz, faces an invisible wall that he and many other merchants face, whether located downtown or in a mall. His store in Fargo must charge its customers 7.5 percent in state and local sales taxes. In Moorhead, the state sales tax takes a bite of 6.875 percent.

Louise Erdrich richly deserves her selection as the latest recipient of the North Dakota Rough Rider Award, which honors current or former North Dakotans who were influenced by the state and achieved national recognition in their field. That’s certainly the case with Erdrich, who grew up in Wahpeton and has won many accolades as an author, including the National Book Award in 2012 for her last novel, “The Round House.”
