Why does N.D. have any unemployment?
A guy at the Y today asked me if I knew where that 3% to 2.5% unemployment figure comes from (for North Dakota). He asked what that 3% were holding out for because he saw in today’s Bismarck Tribune about six pages of help wanted ads, everything from engineers and accountants to waiters and waitresses. I note that today’s Forum’s first 10 pages of classifieds were help wanted ads. It is an interesting question. Who are the 2.5 to 3 percent unemployed, and why are they unemployed?November 28, 2011

Letter to the editor: Legislature did little for people with disabilities
The North Dakota legislative session has ended. Unfortunately, not much was passed to enhance equality for people with disabilities. Senate Bill 2331 in particular stirred up some controversy in the Jamestown area when Rep. Craig Headland, R-Montpelier, claimed on March 26 at a Legislative forum, “people with disabilities who are employable are employed” thus implying there is no need to enhance employment opportunities for people with disabilities. By the time Headland made his comments, it was too late to change his lack of understanding and the bill was voted down on the House floor following the recommendation of “do not pass” by the committee.By Andrea Nelson , May 06, 2011

New jobs added in during December point to growth growth
WASHINGTON — The nation’s economy added 103,000 jobs in December and the unemployment rate dropped to 9.4 percent last month, its lowest level in 19 months. But the job growth fell short of expectations based on a strengthening economy. And the drop in unemployment was partly because people stopped looking for work.By By Christopher S. Productivity gains slow, signal job growth ahead
U.S. companies are running out of ways to increase productivity from leaner workforces, a sign that they may need to step up hiring in the months ahead. That was the takeaway from reports released Thursday by the Labor Department. Productivity grew at an annual rate of 3.6 percent in the first quarter, better than economists had expected. But it still declined sharply from growth that exceeded 6 percent for each of the previous three quarters. The job market is improving, according to a second Labor report.By By Martin Crutsinger, The Associated Press , May 07, 2010

Letter to the editor: Side with the workers, not the employment status quo
It’s no surprise that the Chamber of Commerce folks are writing letters in opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act. They are defending the status quo. The current broken economy made executives and big business owners very, very rich at the expense of the rest of us.By Gary Wendel , April 24, 2009
