“I have spoken often with leaders of efforts to improve European and Asian higher education,” wrote one John L. King in 2007 in a comment on a Business Week story.
“When they ask me what I see as the greatest challenge to their goal of replicating the strength of U.S. higher education, I tell them it is their lack of strong private colleges and universities. The U.S. leads the world in higher education because of the intense competition between public and private institutions at all levels.
Jamestown College’s endowment fund has taken a fiscal hit amid the recession but finances are turning around and the funds should, in time, be back to normal, said Tom Heck, vice president of business affairs.
“Over the course of the last two years certainly our endowment took a huge hit,” Heck said.
North Dakota State University’s endowment expects to have about 13 percent less money for scholarships this year.
NDSU Development Foundation Executive Director Jim Miller estimates about $2.5 million will be available.
