The day his ex-wife could legally remarry, Aaron Schaffhausen hopped aboard a train and left North Dakota to go back to Wisconsin. The next day, he cut their three young daughters' throats, wrapped their necks with his spare T-shirts and tucked them into bed.
Anyone who’s been paying attention to the results is well aware that the Carrington Cardinal girls’ track and field team is a pretty darn good group of athletes this season.
Carrington has finished near or at the top of every meet they’ve competed in this spring, and in some instances the Cards have just downright dominated the competition.
With their seasons on the line, both Jamestown basketball teams stepped up.
After the Bismarck boys and girls took care of Jamestown on Thursday in the opening round of the West Region tournament, the Blue Jays bounced back to earn victories on Friday to keep their seasons alive.
The Jamestown boys overcame a 15-point second-half deficit to defeat St. Mary’s 66-64, while the Blue Jay girls used a 13-0 run late in the first half to run away from Dickinson 59-46.
GRAND FORKS — A year ago the Jamestown girls’ hockey team surprised Fargo North by taking the Spartans to overtime.
On Thursday, however, the third-seeded Spartans were ready.
Maddie Hieb had two goals and an assist to lead Fargo North to a 3-1 victory over No. 6 seed Jamestown on Thursday night at the Ralph Engelstad Olympic Arena.
The preseason buzz surrounding the Barnes County North Lady Bison was spot on.
Barnes County North will enter today’s District 5 girls’ basketball tournament at the Jamestown Civic Center as the No. 2 seed, after playing to a district mark of 5-2, which is where many had the Bison pegged at the start of the season.
Despite their struggling record, the Mandan Bravettes have pushed the Jamestown Blue Jays to the limit this season.
In their first meeting, the Blue Jays had to rattle off four unanswered goals in the third period to overcome a 3-2 deficit, and on Thursday, in Jamestown’s final home game of the season, the Blue Jays found themselves in a deadlock with less than four minutes to play in the game.
But state-tournament caliber teams find ways to win in the clutch and that’s exactly what Jamestown did.
Mandan made seven of nine three-point shots in the second half to pile up 51 points en route to a 76-60 win over the Blue Jays Thursday night.
A shootout broke out over the final 18 minutes after an ugly first half left the scored tied at 25-all heading into the break.
Carrington High School’s girls’ basketball game originally scheduled on Jan. 14 against Cavalier has been cancelled.
No make-up date for the game could be found between the two schools. The game was postponed due to bad weather.
Jamestown High School swept Dickinson out of town Friday night.
The Blue Jay girls led big early, then took control late to snap a four-game skid, while a furious late rally by the JHS boys overcame a monster night by Midget ace Joe Hanstad as Jamestown won its third straight game.
The Blue Jays had not played since Dec. 21, but the wait was well worth it.
They’re back at home today when Williston comes to town. In between games they’ll dedicate the gym floor to N.D. Sports Hall of Fame inductee and former coach Jerry Meyer.
The Napoleon Imperials and the Ellendale Cardinals will once again meet up to decide who’ll be the champions of the Stutsman County girls’ basketball tournament today at 6:30 p.m. at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Napoleon was able to get past South Border 64-36 in Friday’s semifinal action, while Ellendale defeated Midkota 42-34. The Imperials defeated the Cardinals 57-44 in last year’s title game.
The Jamestown Blue Jays got the New Year started in the right direction on Thursday in their first game of 2011 — but a few bizarre bounces nearly resulted in Mandan’s first victory of the season.
Mandan’s Madison Huber and Brooke Lillis each scored in the second period after a few fortunate hops to give the Braves a 3-2 lead going into the second intermission.
The top seeds prevailed during the opening night of the Stutsman County Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Thursday at the Jamestown Civic Center.
No. 1-seeded Napoleon brushed aside Central Prairie 80-31, and No. 4-seeded South Border got past Edgeley-Kulm 53-27.
In the night games, No. 2-seeded Ellendale defeated LaMoure 42-21, while No. 3-seeded Midkota just escaped Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal 55-52.
Finishing games has been a struggle this season for Jamestown and Thursday’s game against Fargo South was no different.
The Bruins rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit to defeat the Blue Jays 6-5 in overtime at Wilson Arena — Jamestown’s third straight loss of two goals or less.
