We know a lot about how babies learn to talk, and youngsters learn to read. Now scientists are unraveling the earliest building blocks of math — and what children know about numbers as they begin first grade seems to play a big role in how well they do everyday calculations later on.
The Stutsman County Commission approved a grade raise to County Highway 62 between Interstate 94 and Spiritwood during a special meeting Wednesday. The contract for $630,000 was awarded to Lindberg Brothers Construction.
The Stutsman County Commission approved engineering reports on four grade raises necessary due to last year’s flooding at its regular meeting Tuesday. The approval moves the projects forward with bids to be awarded by the North Dakota Department of Transportation in May.
The roads are south of Halfway Lake on County Road 68, two separate grade raises on County Road 67 south of Cleveland and a grade raise one mile west of County Road 67 on County Road 38.
North Dakota got mixed grades in an American Lung Association report card evaluating the state’s tobacco use prevention policies.
The state’s top grade came in its financial commitment to its tobacco cessation and prevention program, the $9.3 million a year dedicated by passage of Measure 3 in 2008.

Nearly all of the hard red spring wheat grown in the Upper Midwest made top grade this year, while about three-fourths of the durum crop was top grade — a big improvement over last year, according to North Dakota State University researchers.

An education report card gives North Dakota a C grade, the same grade the state received a year ago and equal to the national average.
Quality Counts 2009 is Education Week’s annual state-by-state analysis of public education.
The James Valley Adult Learning Center held its graduation ceremony on May 14 at the Jamestown High School Theater. Twenty-five graduates who successfully completed the GED examinations received certificates of recognition.
