Every spring thousands of graduates pour out of high schools and colleges around the region. They have reached a milestone in their lives and deserve the recognition and congratulations of friends and community.
If past trends hold, many graduates in Jamestown College’s class of 2013 will find work in North Dakota.
With 160 students graduating on Saturday, 80 percent of the graduates who are from North Dakota will find jobs here in their home state, according to Patricia Rinde, Jamestown College Career Center director.

Roxana Saberi was finally able to give the commencement speech at her alma mater at the weekend, four years after plans for the Fargo native and journalist to speak at Concordia College were scrapped when she was imprisoned in Iran and accused of being a U.S. spy.
Following Jamestown High School’s commencement ceremony Sunday, it marked the start of a new chapter in the lives of those 161 graduates. With more than 60 percent of this year’s class planning to attend a college or university this fall, some of those students have elected to spend their next four years at institutions hundreds of miles away.
As Jamestown College and Valley City (N.D.) State University seniors prepare for graduation this week and next week respectively, their role in society will soon make that daunting turn from student to employee.
For graduates all over the U.S., entering into the real world means entering into a March national unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. But those remaining here in North Dakota look to benefit from the country’s best state unemployment rate, which was at 3.8 percent in March.
U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates spoke to more than 8,400 graduates and guests at North Dakota State University’s commencement activities Saturday.
Gates’ appearance garnered heightened interest after the death of Osama bin Laden.
