I write in response to the Rev. Susan Lester’s letter to the editor in the Jan. 5 issue of The Jamestown Sun. She said it was God’s decision for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to allow openly homosexual clergy.
Lt. Dan Choi doesn’t want to lie. Choi, an Iraq War veteran and a graduate of West Point, declared last March 19 on “The Rachel Maddow Show,” “I am gay.” Under the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” regulations, those three words are enough to get Choi kicked out of the military. Choi has become a vocal advocate for repealing the policy, speaking before tens of thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their allies at last Sunday’s National Equality March in Washington, D.C.

On Aug. 30 two letters suggested that since we no longer submit to certain laws found in the Book of Leviticus we are now free to ignore what Leviticus (and the rest of Scripture) teaches about homosexuality. But these letters failed to distinguish between the Old Testament ceremonial laws (given only to the Jews and only for a temporary period of time) and the universal moral laws (which apply to all people of all times).
I’m writing this in response to a letter titled, “What would John think of lawmakers’ actions?” I’m fully aware how “politically incorrect” it is in 2009 to actually have the audacity to stand for something as “old fashioned” as the infallible word of the living God.
The North Dakota Senate voted 27 to 19 on Wednesday in support of a bill that adds gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals to the protected classes in the state Human Rights Act.
Senate Bill 2278 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in housing, employment, credit transaction and use of public accommodation.
