JRHS holding potato bar fundraiser

The James River Humane Society will hold its third annual silent auction/potato bar from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Knights of Columbus. Tickets are $10 each to be entered into a cash raffle (giving away $500 total). Children 10 and under eat at no charge.

Jennie Barnard, president of the board at the JRHS, said the need for volunteers is great, especially finding people to help with the dogs more than cats.

CDC: GF rabies event exposed risk

A rabies incident last March at Grand Forks’ Circle of Friends Humane Society highlighted the risk faced by animal shelter employees across the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report distributed this week. The incident led to the euthanizing of 31 dogs. In addition, 21 people — including nine shelter employees and one volunteer — received precautionary rabies shots.

Letter to the editor: Support Humane Society’s work with ‘yes’ vote

My family, along with many other families in Jamestown, have adopted pets from the James River Humane Society or maybe have pets buried in the pet cemetary on the Humane Society property. We appreciate the caring people who volunteer endless hours there in so many ways. Besides giving special care to the pets, these people work to raise funds to keep the shelter going. They have bake sales, chili feeds, spaghetti feeds, sell pecans and more.

JRHS asks for levy from city to pay bills The James River Humane Society seeks a 1/2-mill tax levy to support its operation and is asking for votes in the upcoming election. The measure would cost about $2.25 per year on a property valued at $100,000, according to the city of Jamestown. If passed, it would generate about $13,500 each year to support the shelter’s general operating expenses, said Skip Olson, JRHS president.

Humane Society filled with cats and dogs Roscoe has a new home. The 2-year-old corgi mix became the companion of Paul Orner Thursday night at the James River Humane Society. Roscoe had been a resident of the shelter since October when he was found along a highway near Edgeley.

JRHS’ Black Friday breakfast set at mall

The James River Humane Society will hold a fundraiser at the Buffalo Mall on Friday. The shelter will serve breakfast sandwiches and bagels. It will cost $4 for coffee and a sandwich and $1 for the bagels. Serving starts at 5 a.m.
