Nine Jamesriver figure skaters brought home 13 first-place medals at the Leap and Compete Basic Competition in Wahpeton on Feb. 27.
The event was a basic competition for skaters of all levels from beginners (first year) to low competitive levels.
The Jamesriver Figure Skating Club earned 13 first-place finishes and Libbie Allen, Sami Buhl, Morgan Huber and Abby Wenzel placed third as a team at the 13th Annual Red River Valley Figure Skating Classic in Moorhead Feb. 12-13.
Jamesriver skaters also accounted for nine second-place finishes, eight thirds, and four fourths in the 25-club event, which featured over 300 skaters from North Dakota and Minnesota. They earned trophies in 29 of 34 events.
Jamesriver figure skaters piled up 16 first-place finishes at the 21st Annual Magic City International Figure Skating Competition and the 10th Annual Basic Skills Competition both held in Minot Jan. 9-10.
The Jamesriver Figure Skating Club racked up 11 first-place finishes at the Red River Valley International Classic Feb. 13-14.
Emily Suckow (2), Jocelyn Meidinger (2), Elizabeth Jensen (2), Morgan Huber, Abby Wenzel, Elizabeth Allen and Samantha Buhl accounted for the top-place finishes for the club. They also had four runner-up finishes on the day, with Christina Radi earning both. Hannah Muhs also competed.
It may have been the first time my parents took me fishing. Mom was sitting in a lawn chair in a grassy pasture above a vertical bank that dropped to the river — probably somewhere on the James — and Dad was there too, but I can’t remember my brother on the trip.

Not much can be done to change the weather, officials say, but renters and home and business owners can find ways to protect themselves from flood damage.
Most insurance policies do not include flood protection, said Adam Hamm, North Dakota insurance commissioner, but Jamestown residents as well as most residents in the Region 6 area qualify for the federal insurance policy.
