Sloan steps down as Jazz coach

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan stepped down Thursday after 23 seasons and 1,127 wins at the helm of the Utah Jazz, saying he simply ran out of energy to coach anymore. “I had a feeling this time was the time to move on,” an emotional Sloan said during a Thursday afternoon news conference. “(That’s) a long time to be in one organization. Again, I’ve been blessed. Today is a new day. When I get this over with, I’ll feel better. My time is up and it’s time to move on.”

NBA playoffs: Kobe rallies Lakers past Jazz in opener

While the Los Angeles Lakers’ reserves haplessly gave away the lead early in the fourth quarter, the Utah Jazz celebrated every basket with increasing glee, spilling off their bench in anticipation of an upset. Even the Hollywood crowd was tense, with many fans anxiously kneading or waving the giveaway white T-shirts they apparently were too cool to wear. “It was tough,” Kobe Bryant said. “But when it got really tough for me, I just checked myself in.”

Jazz Pianist Paul Asaro will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Valley City (N.D.) State University’s Vangstad Auditorium. Asaro performs at jazz and Ragtime festivals, clubs and theaters worldwide and has appeared onstage with musical legends and luminaries such as Leon Redbone, Steve Allen, Marian McPartland, Orange Kellin and Duke Heitger.

Jazz to keep F Paul Millsap

The Utah Jazz are going to hang on to forward Paul Millsap. The Jazz posted on their Web site Thursday evening that they plan to match Portland’s offer to Millsap, a restricted free agent. A formal announcement was scheduled for Friday, the last day Utah can match the $32 million deal that includes $10.3 million up front.

IMC features jazz on weekend

The sixth session of the International Music Camp’s 54th season climaxes with a series of performances featuring jazz, vocal jazz, concert band and dance groups. The IMC All Star Faculty Jazz Band takes the stage at the International Peace Garden in the Masonic Auditorium at 8 p.m. Friday. The 18-member band is made up of the teaching staff from the IMC and will present a mixture of jazz standards, swing and big band music, as well as original compositions for big band. Dr. Matt Patnode from North Dakota State University, Fargo, directs the group.
