Kulm, Oakes schools among award nominees 
Ninteen North Dakota Guard and Reserve service members nominated their employers for the 2010 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the U.S. government to employers for their outstanding support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. Only members of the Guard and Reserve or their family members are eligible to nominate their employers for the award.

ALIVE performing at Alfred Church 
ALIVE will perform at 7 p.m. March 6 at Church of God (7th Day), Alfred, N.D.
“ALIVE” is a gospel choir based in Kulm, N.D., and is directed by Steve Anderson. The choir was organized in 1990 and is now in its 20th concert season. The members of the choir reside in south central North Dakota communities of Kulm, Jud, Ellendale, Lehr, Gackle and Fredonia, and represent six church denominations as well as a wide variety of occupations.

N.D. museum fire blamed on arson 
The state fire marshal’s office says a Nov. 9 blaze that gutted the museum at the Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site in southeastern North Dakota was intentionally set.

Museum near Kulm damaged by fire 
There were no injuries when a fire Monday morning damaged the museum at the Whitestone Hill battlefield site in western Dickey County, said an official with the Edgeley Volunteer Fire Department, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Events set at Whitestone Hill historic site 
A series of free public programs commemorating key anniversaries at the Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site near Kulm will be featured Sunday, Aug. 30, and Friday, Sept. 4.
The events for both days are sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the site’s Friends group, the Whitestone Hill Battlefield Historical Society.

Windfest Days set in Kulm 
Kulm, N.D., is planning its sixth annual Windfest Days celebration this weekend.
The event will begin Friday with a steak fry from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the golf course.

Memorial Day program set at Whitestone Hill 
A program commemorating Memorial Day will take place at the Whitestone Hill Battlefield State Historic Site near Kulm, N.D., on Monday.
The memorial service program will begin at 3 p.m., conducted by members of the Kulm and Forbes American Legion posts.

Funds award to area groups 
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $1 million in federal economic recovery funds to several North Dakota rural communities, Sens. Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan and Rep. Earl Pomeroy, all D-N.D. announced Monday.

Kulm receiving loan for sewer project 
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Wednesday that 193 water and environmental projects will receive funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The cost of the projects totals more than $615.8 million.

Schools discuss special education redesign plan 
In the seventh special education redesign draft, officials presented a plan that would leave most services and personnel the same, but would cost Jamestown Public Schools about $80,000 more.
Jamestown, as well as Medina, Montpelier and Pingree-Buchanan school districts make up the Buffalo Valley Special Education unit. To cut costs and continue its level of service, BVSEU is considering partnering with the Dickey-LaMoure Special Education Unit, which consists of the Edgeley, Ellendale, Kulm, LaMoure and Litchville-Marion districts.

Adams finds controlled chaos in Kulm 
Sun Assistant Editor Logan C. Adams went down to Kulm, N.D., recently during the town’s WindFest celebration for the Sun series “Discovering Dakota,” which continues today in The Jamestown Sun.
The report includes stories of the town’s parade, a classic car show, festival dining and getting dirty during the demolition derby.
