What Does It Take to Be an Expert?
I have no letters after my name. Okay, officially I have a B.A., which in today's climate stands less for Bachelor of Arts as it does for Buy Additional -- credits, tuition, college time -- leading t...

DIY Fabric Animal Decor
Our second bathroom is the kid's bathroom. When I first moved in to our house, the room had been painted a teal and dark pink color to match the fish-designed shower curtain. Personally, the color com...

The Advent Grinch
Yesterday was Christmas! It was a great day for the family, a great day of travel, and a great Christmas service at church. The sermon was fantastic - it always is in my eyes (my huz is the pastor, bu...

Letters from the past
When I realized last Friday it was the 25th anniversary of the day the Challenger blew up, it made me think of a letter I once received. Back when my husband Eric was in the U.S. Navy, he sent me ple...

Letter to the editor: Even children know that Kalk is the best candidate
Brian Kalk’s experience as a Marine, having served in both operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, has been instrumental in building the character that North Dakota needs when sending representation to Washington.By Jeanne M. Sortland , May 23, 2012
Letter to the editor: Other states with laws like Measure 3 are doing fine
Cheryl Bergian’s May 17 letter in The Jamestown Sun regarding the Religious Liberty Restoration Amendment, (Measure 3) details the same undocumented allegations about litigation and clogging the courts we’ve heard time and time again.By Lydia Trandem , May 22, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 3 restores needed protection for our liberty
Whenever someone wants to defeat legislation they are sure to claim that proposal is “vague” and “unclear,” whether it is true or not. What is surprising, however, is that some attorneys would employ the same tactic with Measure 3.By Christopher Dodson, Bismarck , May 21, 2012
Letter to the editor: Religious leaders do not need Measure 3’s privileges
In a few days I will be 84 years old. I am a lifelong Catholic and I recently realized that no public issue has ever been so troublesome to me as is Measure 3 on the June 12 ballot in North Dakota. It has been introduced by a group that is led by the two North Dakota Catholic bishops.By George A. Sinner , May 19, 2012
Letter to the editor: Downstream residents must be wary of open ditches
Both the West End and East End outlets from Devils Lake will soon be operating, the North Dakota State Water Commission recently announced. That could mean increased flows in the Sheyenne River, as the two outlets will add a total of 600 cubic feet per second to what is already in the river. By late summer that will mean more than 10 times as much water as normal in the river.By Richard Betting , May 19, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 3 guarantees religious freedoms for all
Sometimes, ignorance drives fear. Sometimes, fear drives ignorance. North Dakota’s proposed Measure 3 seems to have generated some of both.By Vince Ulstad , May 18, 2012
Letter to the editor: Cramer has the wrong stance on illegal immigration
Congressional candidate Kevin Cramer, who is is trying for the fourth time to warm that seat, tipped his hand recently when asked a challenging question facing our country. His answer was to give up and forget about obeying the law, if it is easy.By Phyllis Hankey Schindele , May 17, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 3 is a great way to unleash endless litigation
Measure 3 amends our North Dakota Constitution to provide that if anyone in North Dakota takes an action based on a “sincerely held religious belief,” our state (for example, state’s attorney, for criminal actions, or labor commissioner, for employment discrimination) would have to prove that our state could prevent that action only if there is a “compelling governmental interest.”By Cheryl Bergian , May 17, 2012
Letter to the editor: Ending property taxes will take senior programs’ funds
AARP North Dakota is among a large group of associations, businesses and individuals opposing Measure 2 on the June primary election ballot. AARP joined the Keep It Local North Dakota coalition opposing this constitutional measure because passage of this flawed proposal has the potential to impact numerous services provided by local units of government. Those include emergency services such as police, fire and ambulance.By Janis Cheney , May 16, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 2 will benefit North Dakotans the most
Opponents of Measure 2 seem to be fixated on fact that nonresident property owners would not be paying property taxes. Sixteen percent of total property taxes are paid by nonresident property owners (71 percent of nonresident property is commercial property; 23 percent agricultural and 6 percent residential). While 16 percent of all property is nonresident owned, 84 percent is owned by North Dakota residents.By Robert L. Hale , May 16, 2012
Letter to the editor: Kalk is the right person to send to Washington
I first met Brian Kalk when he was running for public service commissioner. I liked him instantly and was impressed with his qualifications and the easy and sincere way he related to people of all ages. My respect and admiration for him have increased over the years as he has served our state with common-sense solutions and diligent hard work The people of North Dakota are so fortunate to have somebody like Kalk to send to the House of Representatives in Washington.By Charlane Bertsch , May 15, 2012

This is Jamestown’s chance to enjoy fine music, put its best foot forward and welcome a special group of people to town for the first time.By Kate Stevenson , May 15, 2012
Letter to the editor: Measure 2 gives the power back to the people
The Measure 2 “No” people do not trust the North Dakota Legislature to come up with a fair formula for distributing funds to replace property tax. Formulas exist already for distribution of funds to the political subdivisions that include the schools, roads and other mandated services.By Keith Colville, Valley City, N.D. , May 14, 2012
Letter to the editor: N.D. taking steps to preserve park and state lands
In December 2011, the North Dakota Industrial Commission took a major step to protect the Little Missouri State Park.By Lynn D. Helms, Bismarck , May 14, 2012
Letter to the editor: Berg’s votes on issues speak for themselves
The recent letters to the editor in support of Rick Berg have been entertaining. One of them proclaims Berg to be a leader, even though his own party stripped him of his leadership position when he was in the Legislature.By Don Filler, Harvey, N.D. , May 14, 2012
