President Barack Obama has congratulated the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks for winning the National Basketball Association championship and says he looks forward to seeing the team in person at the White House.
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks are on the brink of their first championship in the most fitting of ways: They cranked up their offense.
As much as coach Rick Carlisle preaches defense, this franchise that rose to prominence a decade ago by outscoring ‘em did exactly that in Game 5 of the NBA finals, riding 29 points from Dirk Nowitzki and 13 3-pointers to a 112-103 victory over the Miami Heat on Thursday night for a 3-2 series lead.
DALLAS (AP) — Kevin Durant scored 24 points and James Harden added 23, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 106-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night, knotting the Western Conference finals at one game each.
Durant was as tough to guard as ever, but the real difference was Harden and the bench coming up big, especially down the stretch.
The Spurs moved on, and Dallas is done early again.
Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and San Antonio survived blowing a 22-point lead to beat the Mavericks 97-87 in Game 6 on Thursday night, handing Dirk Nowitzki and second-seeded Dallas another first-round exit.
Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood gave the Dallas Mavericks the energy, toughness and scoring they needed — in other words, everything the Mavs expected when they traded for them a few months ago.
Butler scored a career playoff-best 35 points and had 11 rebounds, and Haywood provided a strong inside presence at both ends in his first start of this postseason, keeping the Mavericks alive by leading them to a 103-81 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their first-round series.
The battered reputation of Josh Howard took another hit this week when an online video surfaced showing the Dallas Mavericks forward disrespecting the national anthem.
In a video posted on YouTube, Howard is shown on a football field at a charity flag football game. As the national anthem plays in the background, Howard approaches a camera and says: “‘The Star Spangled Banner’ is going on right now. I don’t even celebrate that (expletive). I’m black.”
