MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Recent Medal of Honor recipient and North Dakota resident Clinton Romesha is slated to give the keynote address at a Memorial Day ceremony Monday in at the Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan.
On Monday, we as a nation took a day to honor and remember those who have fallen in the line of duty and those who continue to serve our country.
Often times we look to sports as a way to forget about some of life’s harshest realities. But a number of athletes, from this modern era and ones before, put military service ahead of fame and fortune as a professional athlete.
President Barack Obama paid tribute Monday to the men and women who have died defending America, pointing to Vietnam veterans as an under-appreciated and sometimes maligned group of war heroes who remained true to their nation despite an unwelcome homecoming.
For some people Memorial Day is the holiday that starts the summer.
For others it is chance to honor all veterans — a general salute to every man or woman who served in this country’s armed services.
For others it is a personal event with a special meaning.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Subtropical storm Beryl began moving faster toward an expected landfall Sunday night on the Southeast U.S. coast, threatening Memorial Day beachgoers with forecast conditions of dangerous surf and drenching rains from northeast Florida up through a swath of the Carolinas.
Nearly a decade later, after more than 1,400 killed in combat, some U.S. troops paused for a moment Sunday to remember what brought America to Afghanistan and to honor the lives that continue to be lost.
A full slate of events around the area and at the state level offer people the chance to honor the men and women who have perished in this country’s wars. Many include placing wreaths and raising flags in honor of the veterans of the U.S. military.
