Your challenge beginning on Feb. 15 is to practice at least 10 minutes of stress management each day.By Marla Walter , February 11, 2010
Next week’s challenge: Limit television time
We are heading into week four of the New Year, New You Fitness Challenge starting on Sunday, Jan 31. You may be facing one of the toughest challenges yet! Your challenge this week is to limit screen time (TV, computers, playstation, etc) to 1 to 2 hours per day during your leisure hours. A recent study discovered that increased time sitting watching TV can increase your risk of early death from cardiovascular disease. So turn off the tube and get moving!By Marla Walter, Wellness Challenge Coordinator , January 28, 2010
Weight loss and healthy eating are focus this week
Weight loss is a goal of many New Year New You challenge participants. Counting calories is something that takes time to do, but can be a real eye opener for most people. In week three we encourage everyone to determine their calorie needs and record food intake daily including calories.By Joan Enderle, Licensed Registered Dietitian , January 21, 2010
Most taking part in challenge are women
The 2010 New Year, New You challenge has 602 participants made up of 32 business teams and seven Friends and Family Teams. There are fewer participants than last year, but according to the Go Red Survey Monkey, almost 40 percent are new to the challenge. We also discovered that about 80 percent are female and 87 percent are in the 25- to 55-year-old age group. The fact that the majority of participants are women is good news, because studies have shown that women can have a positive effect on the food choices the rest of their family makes.By Marla Walter, New Year, New You Coordinator , January 21, 2010
How to find those New Year, New You videos
Welcome to week one! The New Year Challenge is off to a great start. We are still receiving registrations from new teams! Everyone has been asking about the DVDs. They will be aired on CSi cable on the replay station (channel 58) after regular programming (on a rotating basis) and on Daktel the Jimmies channel (channel 16) Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. DVDs may be checked out from the Alfred Dickey Public Library as well. There are 11 educational DVDs — three “pre-challenge” programs and then one for each successive week. The three pre-challenge DVDs focus on eating fruits and vegetables, changing your lifestyle habits and the benefits of exercise.By Marla Walter, Jamestown Hospital , January 14, 2010
New Year, New You 2010: Focus on losing weight
The focus of week two for the New Year New You 2010 challenge is weight loss. With 65 percent of adults either overweight or obese it is no surprise that the average person consumes 200-300 calories more than they did 30 years ago and are less physically active. Most weight gain happens slowly and steadily, almost unnoticed until one is 5, 10, 20 or more pounds overweight. Consuming 100 calories daily more than is expended over a period of a year can result in a weight gain of 10 pounds. Small changes if made consistently over time can make a big difference.By Larissa Musgrave, Innovis Health , January 14, 2010
