I really wish someone could tell me why it’s the customer’s responsibility to bail out Otter Tail Power Co. or Montana-Dakota Utilities. I don’t remember them asking us to vote or agreeing to pay for Big Stone II, if it didn’t work out. Do we have to be responsible for their mistake? Why didn’t they go to Washington or the state for the bailout and then pay it back like the banks and auto companies had to? Sure it’s only 62 cents a month for the next three years, but it was their mistake and maybe they should pay for it or the shareholders should. Why are they paying a $1.19 a share dividend or almost 6 percent while we bail them out? If we make a mistake, who bails us out?
Otter Tail Power Co. says it will buy almost 50 megawatts of capacity from a wind farm planned for Griggs and Steele counties.
The proposed $315 million M-Power project near Luverne would have a total capacity of 157.5 megawatts. The state Public Service Commission has scheduled a hearing on it for Aug. 25 in Cooperstown.
A power outage early Thursday morning was unrelated to the power outage Wednesday.
The Thursday power outage was caused by a driver that hit a pole around 2 a.m., said Ritchie Wolf, area engineer for Ottertail Power Company.
Wednesday’s power outage was caused by a tree that grew into a power line north of town.
Otter Tail Power Co. electric customers have been paying sharply higher bills in recent months. But North Dakota’s Public Service Commission says the price spike is ending.
