Casual varmint hunters are mostly opportunists who will bang away at a red fox or coyote with their .30/06 or a .22 rimfire, whichever they happened to be carrying. But serious practitioners of the sport carry rifles chambered for cartridges that fit the purpose, and the very best of these are the .22 centerfires.
