A tsunami that raced across the Pacific swiped island nations and Asian coasts lightly Sunday, proving to be more spectacle than destructive force for communities that had hours to prepare after Chile’s devastating earthquake.

Forecasters say Tropical Storm Linda has formed far out over the Pacific Ocean, but it’s not threatening land right now.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the 12th named storm of the Pacific season had maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (55 kph) on Monday evening.
The cold and snowy winter this season might be attributed to a change in temperature of the Pacific Ocean, said John Wheeler, meteorologist for Forum Communications Co. If that proves true the northern Plains could see several years of harsher weather in the future.
