Letter to the editor: ‘Peace Resolution’ handled very poorly by lawmakers
As a native and lifelong resident of North Dakota I was very disappointed to read how the government and Veterans Affairs Committee handled the “Peace Resolution.” I am not sure whether I support the resolution as originally written or not. Frankly, that doesn’t matter. This resolution was introduced on Jan. 27. It certainly shouldn’t have caught anyone by surprise. If it did, they were not doing their job. I wasn’t even interested in the bill at the time and I knew it was coming through the Legislature.By Alan Webster , April 01, 2011
Officials: Mideast talks may open
WASHINGTON — The Obama administration said Thursday it is near to securing an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians to resume direct peace talks. Some U.S. officials said an announcement could be imminent. The State Department said an agreement was “very, very close” but that details were still being worked out. An announcement could come as early as Friday or Saturday, said administration officials familiar with the matter. They spoke on condition of anonymity due to the delicacy of the ongoing diplomacy.By By Barry Schweid, The Associated Press , August 20, 2010
Obama, Netanyahu agree to focus on peace talks
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to warm rocky relations on Tuesday, declaring that any talk of a rift is unfounded. Obama said the U.S.-Israeli bond is “unbreakable.” The president had praise for his guest following the pair’s meeting at the White House, hailing Israel’s recent decision to greatly ease its 3-year blockade of the Gaza Strip as “real progress.” And he said he believes Netanyahu “wants peace” with the Palestinians and is serious about resuming the face-to-face Mideast peace talks that broke off in December 2008.July 09, 2010
Letter to the editor: Nobel Prize decision was made with poor judgement
My grandparents came from Norway. For the first time in my adult life I am not proud of my country of heritage, Norway. I am so ashamed of my Norwegian roots that I fasted for a week. Yep, I gave up lutefisk for one whole week. Things have to be pretty fishy to get this Norwegian Lutheran to give up lutefisk.By Daniel Rugroden , December 15, 2009

Letter to the editor: Obama’s acceptance of prize was humble, well meant
Earlier this month, President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” To young Americans, like me, the selection of our president for this honor is recognition of his capacity to give the people of this world hope for a better future.By Amanda Kubik , October 21, 2009
Congrats, Mr. President, now earn it
Congratulations to President Barack Obama on his Nobel Peace Prize. I hope he now can do something to earn it. He could begin by bringing peace to American streets, such as those in his hometown. Less than nine months into his presidency, it obviously is early for Obama to be lauded for great achievements. Yet the Norwegian Nobel Committee seems to be saying, why wait? They’re giving him a big “E” for his efforts.By Clarence Page, Chicago Tribune , October 13, 2009
Quieting a noisy neighborhood
”We live in a quiet house in a noisy neighborhood.” Our tour guide’s assessment aptly sums up the difference between his native Jordan and other countries in the Middle East, a difference created almost 15 years ago when Jordan signed the historic peace treaty with Israel.By Steve and Cokie Roberts , September 12, 2009

A Web bridge between Jews and Arabs
In Galilee, northern Israel, there are 1.1 million citizens, evenly divided between Jews and Arabs. There, Rabbi Marc Rosenstein has created a bilingual Internet newspaper with Hebrew and Arabic sections that he describes as “a safe space characterized by openness, fairness and balance — where all opinions can be expressed, civilly.” This bridge of a newspaper is named Dugrinet. (“Dugri” means “straight talk” in both Hebrew and Arabic.)By Nat Hentoff , February 11, 2009
