With pheasant hunting season in full swing and bright orange speckling the landscape, it’s a good time to recognize the state PLOTS and CoverLocks programs and the men and women who participate in them.
Through the PLOTS — Private Land Open to Sportsmen — program, hunters have access to more than 1 million acres of walk-on land across the state. Landowners are reimbursed for opening their land to sportsmen and women.
We’re building on a generation of hunters who grew up with the Conservation Reserve Program. Just about half of that generation has never known a North Dakota landscape that did not have at least a few fields marked with a triangular yellow Private Land Open to Sportsmen or PLOTS sign encouraging walk-in hunting access.

A state guide that maps tracts of public land open to hunting in North Dakota was outdated as soon as it was published, a state official says. Almost daily, farmers lured by high commodity prices are closing their fields to hunters in favor of crops.
