A former North Dakota National Guard soldier has been sentenced to more than 17 years in prison on child pornography charges.
Bernard Fischer, of West Fargo, had pleaded guilty earlier to five counts, including one charge of coercion and enticement.
Michael Karolus will spend the next decade in federal prison for possessing at least a few dozen images of child pornography.
But it’s a history of far more disturbing behavior by the Grand Forks-area man that troubled U.S. District Court Judge Ralph R. Erickson as he handed down the maximum sentence Monday in Fargo.

Three men have been sentenced in federal court on separate child pornography charges.
The U.S. attorney’s office in North Dakota said Stephen O’Berry, Robert Eidson and Brian Kuipers all pleaded guilty to receipt of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors.
U.S. Attorney Timothy Q. Purdon announced that today, Louis J. Solsbury, 23, of Minot, was sentenced before U.S. District Court Daniel L. Hovland on a charge of receipt of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors.
