WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Postal Service said Tuesday it has lost $5.1 billion in the past year, pushing it closer to imminent default on a multibillion-dollar payment and to future bankruptcy as the weak economy and increased Internet use drive down mail volume.
The list of post offices being reviewed by U.S. Postal Service officials for possible closing includes only one in North Dakota. The recently released list of 3,200 postal facilities, about 10 percent of the nation’s total, lists only the University Station Post Office in Fargo as on the chopping block.
